What comes to your mind when you think about self-care?
Typically we may think getting a manicure, pedicure or a massage. While those things are great ways to care for yourself at a deeper level we may need to allow ourselves to feel all of our emotions.
Where I personally am in my life right now I’m learning more and more the value of being aware of my emotions and finding healthy ways to express them.
This may be in the form of allowing yourself downtime. Allowing yourself to be alone and quiet and being OK with it.
Or we may just need to curl up on the couch and have a big cry. Allowing the pain to be released from our bodies physically.
I repressed anger most of my adult life and now that I’ve hit menopause things are changing. It no longer works for me to pretend that everything‘s OK when it is not. I’m learning to allow myself to feel the anger and to express it in healthy ways. One of my favorite ways is to be in my car alone and screaming to the top of my lungs. This allows the emotion to flow through my body and out and it’s very freeing.
The word emotion has the word “motion” in it. It means there needs to be an action. The emotion needs to flow through you and me.
When we hold it in it literally is like poison in our veins. It will kill us and rust us from the inside out.
How are some ways that you can release your so-called negative emotions which I believe there are no negative emotions. There are just emotions. Some feel better than others. But they all need to be acknowledged and loved and valued. They are all trying to teach us something, to help us move forward in a way that we will be true to ourselves. To deny them, any of them will only harm ourselves.
Get creative, be free, allow yourself to feel maybe for the first time in your life, like me. I was so damn afraid of anger because I believed at my core it always brought about violence. I know now that I can release it in a healthy feel good way that will nurture my soul and help guide me toward my next step I need to take. I’m learning to trust myself more!! You Can too!!
